Introduction: 7 Ken Suburi are the seven basic solo movements with sword in Aikidō. Their names are simply ordinal numbers. Below are the names of the 7 Ken Suburi in Aikidō.
Ichi No [ 一の – The First Suburi]
A downward vertical cut.
Ni No [ 二の – The Second Suburi]
Step back into Jodan No Kamae (upper-level stance), then step forward, performing a downward vertical cut.
San No [ 三の – The Third Suburi]
Step back into Waki Gamae (Place the sword near the hip, hiding it behind the back), then step forward, performing a downward vertical cut.
Yon No [ 四の – The Fourth Suburi]
Step forward with a vertically downward cut, then repeat.
Go No [ 五の – The Fifth Suburi]
A step forward while guarding with the sword, then a 70 degree downward cut; repeat
Roku No [ 六の – The Sixth Suburi]
Step back into Jodan No Kamae (upper-level stance); from the stance, step forward and cut vertically downward. Then shuffle forward and thrust
Shichi No [ 七の – The Seventh Suburi]
Step back into Jodan No Kamae; from the stance, step forward and cut vertically downward. Then step forward with the rear foot and thrust.
